I've been circling this for a while without ever landing in the comments, but I feel your pain. We lost our extremely old boy (20-something) last year: he was largely toothless, scruffy and super-diabetic, and he ended up going out with a sudden heart attack. Never thought I'd be that cat guy, but here we are. We have another (ironically bought as a companion), but I don't see us getting another cat any time soon. It's really rough, man.

How do they nestle into our hearts, deeper even than into the cocoons they make on our beds? I don’t know, but I’m so sorry for your losses. Louie was truly a king among cats.

I’m also always hoping that I’m going to be the person with the 18- or 20-year old cat and it hasn’t happened for me yet either — and it breaks my heart every time too.

I’m so sorry. Our companion is a dog now, a sweet, goofy 4-year-old rescue who remains scared of doorways and my old truck, but most of my life was with cats and I miss every one of them, even Little Black Cat who would walk on my face at about 2 in the morning every single night, and even though they all used to pee on my shoes.

Sorry for your loss, guys.😨

I'm decidedly NOT a cat person myself, but it's clear that Louie was a huge part of your lives. 🫂

My condolences, Tom. Louie's personality came through in everything you've shared about him. (I remember Charlie, too!). I feel his loss.

Take whatever time you need. If/when another pet comes into your life, they're gonna be so lucky to have you and Sarah.

It never gets any easier, because you never love the next cat any less. It's stupid that the reward for caring so much is hurting so badly, but what a privilege to have a cat's favor for however long you get it. Much sympathy to you and Sarah.
