One of our best camping experiences lately was when it rained, poured, the whole night. It was so peaceful. I'm always trying to convince the field trip kids that a little rain won't hurt them. Gotta stay hydrated when it's hot. Can't really speak too much to the cold.
I do tend to whip the camera out a lot, but usually it's to document some weird new plant or animal or fungus because I'm fascinated by too many things to hold them all in my head.
Depending on where you live, staying inside when it rains (or is cold) means giving up half your year! I don't think taking photos is bad unless you spend most of your time seeing the word through the viewfinder. I try to snap my photos quickly and drink things in, but I don't stop myself from taking a photo if I see something interesting.
"I try to put the camera, binoculars, or phone down and experience places only with my senses, and allow my memory to keep its own images."

I leave my phone at home as often as I can, and it's very liberating. On the other hand, if I didn't need it to get into that Poguetry show, I would not have had the good fortune to meet you and Sarah just about five years ago!
Excellent point, Thomas: "The time to be outside is not always “free”…and this makes it all the more precious."
I find myself hiking in all 4 seasons in the same conservation area more and more. Over the past few years. I have narrowed my focus and learned to appreciate this one park in hot, cold, rain, snow, etc. Seeing the changes and cycles on Nature has been such an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing..
Loved reading this because it put into words what I've been experiencing! I got a puppy in October 2024. She loves all the kinds of weather and, because I take my puppy owning responsibilities seriously, I've had to learn. Living in MN, that meant upping my winter gear game. I've been out in all kinds of weather, including -17. Turns out, I love it. Even in my very urban environment I'm enjoying birds, and the sound/feel of the wind and the rain and the snow! I've been outside this winter more than the last 10 winters combined. I've grown stronger, lost a ton of weight and my screen time has dropped by 75% at least. The quality of my life has increased 100%.
"Get your ass outdoors, when it’s windy. When it’s cloudy. Appreciate the discomfort, and a sunny, mild day will feel like the blessing it is." Words to live by. Thank you.

Keep having fun. Nature is healing.
