I checked THE GOSPEL SINGER out of the library last summer -- so far my only exposure to Harry Crews.
I was *very* impressed, but also rather embarassed it took me so long to learn about such a powerful writer. (And apologies if we already had this discussion 😄)
We may have, but who cares? I haven't read that one, but I'll try to find a copy. I've got Karate is a Thing of the Spirit, Florida Frenzy, the Gypsy's Curse, and A Childhood, his memoir. He captured American obsession very well.
Congratulations on the woodpecker differentiation, and props for lifting four days per week! Sorry to hear some inconsiderate trail goers ruined your time—music like that is one of my pet peeves.
A big thumbs down to those 2 playing music on the trails. This made me think of a meme going around recently where the narrator asks: "We have anger management, but no stupidity management. Why do I have to manage my anger when others don't have to manage their stupidity?"
I was thinking today, as I walked in an urban wildlife refuge and had to hear two different people who couldn't walk with their families without music, that it's not their fault. Apple got rid of the headphone jack so they could stop giving free headphones with their $1000 phones, and instead charge hundreds for wireless earbuds. Most smartphones followed suit and removed the headphone jack, did away with free earbuds and even chargers, so it's a burden on the consumer to buy them, and not lose them.
The Folio Society is probably my most expensive indulgence -- luckily, there are many books I'd buy from there they haven't published yet, so I mostly just browse. Though I did go for all the Tolkien they had one year. Beautiful books are so ... beautiful!
I just read Alison Stine's "Dirt." Not my favorite speculative fiction either, but good characters and an interesting premise.

Thanks, James!

I do love their editions. They aren't the easiest books to actually read, though!
I’ve written down all your book recommendations and completely agree with no blaring music on the trails. We are there to be embraced by nature.
Our state park trails — dirt and loose rock — are so narrow. I’ve yet to see an e-bike out there but have seen some on the paved roads.
Thank you, Ann. I hope you enjoy them! There are links to some of them on the front page of the newsletter.
Thanks so much, Thomas!
